Presented is a stunning sterling silver chalice or communion cup. The chalice is done in a handsome paneled style, with an octagonal base. The stem of the chalice is set with panels of rich mellow oxbone, with natural graining and crosshatching visible. The cross on the base is set with the same material. The silver of the stem, between the bone panels, is deliberately oxidized to a bold dark patina. The rest of the silver has a rich gold wash.

The underside of the chalice has a long inscription in Italian, reading "Il Reverendo Guglielmo Vincenzo Vacca, Regalo dei mei genitori, nell'occasione della mia ordinazione al sacro sacerdozio." Beneath this is the date of the presentation, February 2, 1956.

The chalice is in great overall condition. The gold wash is in good shape. The bone material has a vertical crack and repair on one panel, underneath the bowl of the chalice. The silver has no dents, no splits, and no repairs.

The underside of the chalice is marked Poirier and 'metal.' This metal designation does not apply to the majority of the chalice, only the plate on the underside, which is removable. The rim of the base is marked M. Poirier and sterling. The rest of the chalice is also sterling silver, tested and guaranteed.

The chalice stands about 7 7/8 inches tall.

This piece weighs 840.6 grams or 29.7 regular ounces. Considering the metal plate on the underside and the bone material not all of this weight is sterling silver.
