Very Rare c1861 American Sterling 950 Silver Chased Cup Mug of Fargo Family Name
Regular price
$512.00
Presented is a fantastic quality antique American sterling silver cup, dating to circa 1861. The cup is wonderfully hand chased with a very detailed and well executed design of flowers and foliage, flanking a scroll enclosed cartouche on the front. The cartouche has an inscription of Edwin M. Fargo and the date 1861. This piece is from the family of William Fargo, co-founder of the freight company that became today's American Express as well as financial institution Wells Fargo, likewise still a household name. Edwin Morgan Fargo, born 1861, was one of William Fargo's eight children, though unfortunately he would die quite young, in 1865. This remarkable piece of silver came to us in a lot with several other pieces owned by this historic family, which can be found in our store by searching “Fargo.” Most of those pieces have the Fargo surname as a monogram, but this cup is of particular interest as the christening or youth cup of a specific member of the family, complete with birth year and full name.
The cup is stamped on the underside with a maker's mark of W.F. for William Forbes, a retail mark of Ball, Black, & Co, New York, and 950/1000 for the purity of the silver. It's worth noting that this is a higher standard than sterling, which is 925/1000.
This piece is in excellent overall condition. There is a very slight compression to the edge of the foot on one side, but it still sits nicely on a flat surface without wobbling, and the compression is hard to notice without turning the cup upside down. The details of the designs are nice and crisp. There are no splits, no breaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
The cup stands about 4 1/4 inches tall and measures about 4 1/4 inches from the handle to the opposite side.
The cup weighs 194 grams or 6.8 regular ounces. -jm
