Presented is a superb set of 11 antique French first standard silver coffee or demitasse spoons. These spoons are made in a classical Fiddle Thread and Shell pattern, with a bold crisp shell design to the terminals of the handles. These spoons have a very finely engraved armorial crest on the reverse of the handles, with a bifurcated shield bearing a lion rampant on one half and three birds on the other, beneath the coronet granted a marquis and above a banner bearing a Latin motto. The motto reads “Os et Ungues Sanguine Madent” which translates as “Mouth and claw dripping with blood.”
Each spoon is stamped in the bowl with the French first standard mark guaranteeing silver purity of 950/1000, as well as the maker's mark for Emile Puiforcat. It's worth noting that French first standard silver (950) is a higher purity of silver than sterling, which is 925.
This set is in excellent condition. The details of the pattern are nice and crisp. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
Each spoon is about 4 7/8 inches long.
The total weight for the set is 219 grams or 7.7 regular ounces. -jm
