Presented is a lovely antique French silver cruet stand, with two blue cut to clear glass cruet bottles. The stand itself is a pre-Revolution piece, dating to around the 1760s, while the bottles date to circa 1850-1900. Though the bottles are not original, they fit well and work wonderfully with the stand. The stand itself is very ornate, with bold beadwork around the rim and acanthus leaf decoration, all hand chased and quite crisp. On the little cups that hold the bottles are detailed grape leaf and grape cluster openwork designs, beneath classical scrolls and acanthus. The bottles feature beautifully cut floral decoration, allowing the clear glass to show through the blue for a nice contrast. The bottles have silver lids, and the stand has two little vacancies to hold the lids while the bottles are being used. This cruet set and stand are in excellent overall condition. One lid has a slight compression to the finial, which is hard to notice.
The silver is in great shape, with nice crisp details. No breaks, no splits, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs. The glass has no chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs.
The stand itself, as well as the two baskets/cups which unscrew from the stand, have 18th century French hallmarks including a maker's mark or possibly a city mark, and two 'B' marks which may be a city mark for Bordeaux or Blaye, both used in the late 1700s according to Tardy's International Hallmarks on Silver. The stand also has the French boar's head tax mark, presumably a mark added much later with assaying/tax collection. The lids which are likely a later addition have French hallmarks as well, as used in the early 1800s. The silver purity for the stand itself is at least 950, the lids may be second standard (800).
The stand itself measures about 11 3/4 x 6 1/2 x3 1/4 inchs, LxWxH. The height with the bottles in place is about 9 1/8 inches.
The total weight for the piece is 1728 grams. The weight of just the silver portion is 779 grams or 27.5 regular ounces. -jm
