Superb c1891 Jacobi Sterling Silver Repousse Monteith Punch Bowl Gordon Crest

Presented is a superb antique American sterling silver punch or centerpiece bowl. This bowl was made by Jacobi & Co and dates to circa 1891. The bowl is a made in a classical Monteith form, with ring form handles and a undulating design to the rim. The bowl is fantastically hand chased with repousse fruit and flowers throughout, all finely detailed and well done. The handle rings are held in the mouths of lion head masks, which are likewise quite detailed. Engraved on the side is a coat of arms charged with three boars' heads, with another boar's head as the crest on top and a banner with the motto “Animo non astutia” beneath, Latin for “By courage, not cunning,” associated with the Gordon name. The interior center of the bowl has a presentation reading N. C. Gordon from C and J Pleasants, Nov 18 1891, which is repeated on the upper side of the foot rim. This was a wedding gift to Anne (Nan) Campbell Gordon, who married John Quitman Lovell in 1891; in our research we found another extremely high end piece of silver by Jacobi, also given as a wedding gift, which remained with the family in the Baltimore area until modern times. This bowl is in excellent overall condition. The details of the decoration are exceptionally crisp and clean. There is one tiny split to one of the flanges around the rim (the one above the crest) but this is very hard to notice without close, careful inspection. There are no other splits, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs. The bowl is stamped on the underside with the maker's mark for A. Jacobi & Co, Baltimore, and sterling. The bowl measures about 10 3/8 inches in diameter and stands about 8 inches tall at the highest point of the rim. The bowl has a liquid capacity of about 12 cups (96 fluid ounces/2.8 liters) when filled to a reasonable level.
