Presented is a fantastic quality antique Gorham sterling silver and American Brilliant Period cut glass inkwell. This piece dates to around the 1890s. The lid and collar of the inkwell are sterling silver, with the top of the lid fabulously hand chased with a detailed design of roses and their leaves and stems. The center of the lid has an applied silver disk with a monogram of L in Gothic lettering; we expect that this disk was placed to cover another monogram, but the silver of the disk is quite thick, so the existing L monogram could be buffed out and replaced with your monogram or left blank. The glass of the inkwell is done in a five petaled or lobed form, with each lobe beautifully decorated with intaglio cut and frosted flowers, quite detailed and depicted with their stems and leaves in a realistic way. The glass is unsigned, but the quality of the decoration and the glass itself suggests a high end maker like Hawkes, Dorflinger, Tuthill, or the like. We show the inkwell with black fabric inside to more clearly show how the floral decoration looks in person, particularly if the inkwell were to be filled with ink.
This piece is in excellent condition. The silver is in great shape with no splits, no dents, and no repairs. The glass has no chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs.
The silver portion is stamped with the maker's mark for Gorham as well as sterling and a product number D794.
This inkwell stands about 4 3/4 inches tall and measures about 3 3/4 inches in diameter.
This piece weighs 1580 grams or 55.7 ounces. -jm
