Presented is an excellent quality antique Japanese or Chinese cloisonne censer or potpourri jar, dating to circa 1850-1880. The jar is made in a classical round bodied form, standing on three legs in the form of lion or dragon masks with protruding tongues, with matching lion masks holding ring form handles at the sides. The cloisonne is well done and very colorful, depicting two royal dragons in yellow, blue and red approaching a flaming pearl, all against a black background with stylized cloud designs. The rim has a border of Chinese meander, and even the underside is decorated with a floral design. The lid is quite nicely done as well, with stylized fu bats, more clouds, and flames, and a separately cast, finely hand textured/engraved fu dog/lion finial.

This piece is in excellent overall condition. There is a small flake to the black enamel, on one shoulder, which does not go all the way through to the metal beneath. The legs and the finial have some wiggle, but we have not tried tightening the bolts inside, as they are original and may need some coaxing. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, and no repairs.

The censer stands about 7 inches tall to the top of the finial of the lid, and measures about 5 1/2 inches wide at the widest point. -jm
