Presented is a superb quality antique bronze snuff or tobacco box. This piece dates to circa 1856, based on the inscription, and we believe it is of Turkish or other Middle Eastern origin. The box is very finely hand engraved with intricate decoration in a very European style, but the inscription on the lid is in Turkish or another visually similar language. The box is made in a handsome cut cornered or octagonal form. The bronze has a rich old dark patina, with green-blue oxidation visible particularly in the recesses of the designs.
The box is in great condition. The lid opens and shuts well, and the hinges are in great shape. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, and no repairs.
The box measures about 4 ¾ by 2 1/8 by 1 5/8, LxWxH.
The box weighs 254 grams or 9.0 regular ounces.
