Presented is a stunning pair of sterling silver convertible three light candelabra, by Dominick & Haff, dated 1895. These candelabra are made in a very elegant “Adams style” design, with almost an urn type of shape to the central shafts. The lower portions of the shafts and the upper portion of the feet have a vertical fluted decoration, with a scroll enclosed cartouche near the top of the shaft, front and back. Each candelabra has a monogram of BJB engraved in one cartouche, with the opposite side's cartouche left blank, so it would be easy to display these pieces with the monogram facing a wall or the like. The bobeches/wax drips and socles are removable for ease of cleaning. The bobeches, socles, and arms are completely made from sterling silver, while the shafts and bases are uncommonly thick, heavy gauge sterling silver with interior weighting for stability. These candelabra are convertible, so the branches can be removed and the central shafts can be used as single candlestick holders, making this a very versatile addition to any home's décor.
These candelabra are in excellent overall condition. One candelabra has two little dings to one socle, both low down where they will be hard to notice. There are no other dents, no splits, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
Both candelabra are stamped and guaranteed sterling silver, with the maker's mark for Dominick & Haff, dated 1895. There is also a retail mark for Bailey, Banks & Biddle.
Each candelabra stands about 14 inches tall and measures about 12 1/4 inches across the arms. Without the arms, each candlestick is about 10 inches tall.
The total weight for the pair is 1828 grams, or 64.5 regular ounces. The weight of just the arms and bobeches, which is all sterling silver with no interior weighting, is 854 grams or 30.1 regular ounces. With the thick gauge sterling silver of the shafts and bases, despite the interior weighting of these, we estimate that about 70-75% of the total weight is sterling silver. -jm
