Presented is a fantastic set of 6 antique English sterling silver handle dinner knives. The set consists of three Georgian knives, with three Victorian knives made later to match. The handles are done in a stylish half ribbed pattern, each finely hand engraved with a crest of a boar's head couped. The blades are carbon steel in the Old French form, and as such have a very sharp edge. Carbon steel will darken with use, and should be cleaned promptly after use by hand, never put through a dishwasher.

This set is in great overall condition. The handles have some surface wear, commensurate with age and use, but no splits, no serious dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs. The carbon steel blades have the occasional spot of pitting, but nothing of any consequence.

All six knives have English hallmarks, but the marks vary in how clear they are as well as what they are. Three have a very clear maker's mark of MB, likely Matthew Bolton, with the lion passant for sterling silver, the duty stamp of King George III's head, and the date letter O for 1809 (2) or M for 1807. Two of the other three have Victorian marks: Queen Victoria's duty stamp, the lion passant, the crown for the city of Sheffield, and at least one other rubbed mark. The last has mostly rubbed marks, likely the Victorian marks again. Regardless, all the knives match in design and crest, so presumably the Victorian knives were made to match later.

Each knife is about 11 inches long.

The total weight for the set is 668 grams, or 23.6 regular ounces. Not all of this weight is sterling silver, due to the filling of the handles and the carbon steel blades. -jm
