Presented is a wonderful antique South Staffordshire enameled tea caddy. The tea caddy is beautifully enameled with a different scene of countryside scenes of a boy tending his cows, sheep, and goat. The scenes are framed with elegant gold scrolls on a white background. Originally the tea caddy would have had a white enameled cap, but this is no longer present. A sterling silver lid was made to take the place of the original. It was clearly made for this piece as it is a perfect fit. The tea caddy was made in England around 1770. It was definitely made in the 18th century.
This rare South Staffordshire tea caddy is in very good condition, considering that these pieces are usually in very rough shape. It has only a few minor problems. There are some stress lines and hairlines on the top of the piece as you can see in the last photo. There are also some stress lines in the enameling on the sides of the tea caddy, but most of these were done in the making and are not damages. As described above, the sterling silver lid is a replacement that was made to take the place of the original enameled cover. It fits the piece perfectly and will work just fine. Some small losses to the enameling have been filled in, particularly along the top edge. However, overall the vast majority of the enameling is intact. There are no major cracks, no breaks, and no other repairs. Typically these pieces are in horrendous condition with numerous breaks and major losses to the enameling, so it is quite remarkable to find a piece of this sort in such good condition with no major damages.
The tea caddy measures 2 1/2 inches by 3 1/4 inches and is 4 inches tall. Weight: 8.5 oz (242.1 grams)
