Rare Set 6 c1790s South Carolina American Coin Silver Teaspoons John Munro
Regular price
$737.00
Presented is a fantastic set of 6 early American coin silver coffee or teaspoons, dating to circa 1785-1810. These spoons were made by John Munro, a South Carolina silversmith. The spoons are made in a handsome classic Fiddle pattern, with distinctive shoulders above the bowls and fiddlehead shaped terminals. The terminals are monogrammed DSB, in flowing script. Southern-made American silver is much harder to find today than New England and New York silver, so this is a rare and highly collectible set.
This set is in excellent condition, particularly considering age. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
The spoons are all stamped with a maker's mark of J. Munro. Given the time period and the distinctive spelling of Munro, we feel certain this is the mark of John Munro, a Charleston South Carolina silversmith active circa 1785-1810. There is also a Canadian John Munro, but since the spoons lack any of the English style hallmarks used by Canada at the time, the South Carolina maker seems the more likely bet by far.
Each spoon is about 5 3/8 inches long.
The total weight for the set is 103 grams or 3.6 regular ounces. -jm
