Rare Irish c1770s Sterling Silver Double End Marrow Scoop w Hand Ulster Crest
Regular price
$497.00
Presented is a superb quality antique Irish sterling silver double ended marrow scoop. This piece dates to circa 1769-1783, and was made in Dublin, likely by John Craig. The scoop is very well made with a great feeling of weight in the hand, with an elongated scoop end and then a narrower scoop making up the handle. The midpoint has a small but very neatly engraved crest of a hand, palm up, associated with the Farquhar name, though given the provenance it may have some relation to the Red Hand of Ulster.
This piece is hallmarked with the seated Hibernia mark for sterling silver, the harp crowned for the city of Dublin in a shaped punch that dates the piece prior to 1786, and the maker's mark IC likely for John Craig, who worked circa 1769-1783.
This piece is in excellent condition. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
The marrow scoop measures about 8 7/8 inches long.
This piece weighs 71.2 grams or 2.5 regular ounces. -jm
