Presented is a great set of 9 coin silver teaspoons by Vanderslice. The spoons are done in a Gothic style pattern that closely resembles Gorham’s Cottage pattern. The spoons are monogrammed AYB. They were made in San Francisco but were sold in San Jose, California in the 1850s or 1860s. In 1850 the population of San Jose was only about 4,000 people, a tiny fraction of its present population.
Although the spoons are not made in San Jose, California, this is the earliest that I have seen San Jose stamp on any silver. Really quite a rarity. A great item for anybody who collects things related to early San Jose history. The spoons are hallmarked on the reverse with V. & Co. for William Vanderslice & Company. They are also marked San Jose and J. Lewis for the retailer.
The condition is excellent. The designs are very sharp and crisp. There are no dents, no dings, no breaks, and no repairs.
The spoons are 6 inches long.
The weight is 191.3 grams or 6.7 ounces.
