Presented is a wonderful antique American Victorian 10 karat yellow gold mourning or memorial type ring, dating to circa the 1820s-1840s. The ring is beautifully made, with milgrain finish edges and a channel where a plait of brown hair has been set. The head of the ring is a charmingly designed as a finely hand engraved and detailed buckle, with a small cartouche area for inscription or engraving, which is blank. The interior of the band has a presentation inscription, “John to--” a name we can't quite make out, that begins with A.

The ring itself is in great overall condition. The details of the belt and buckle design are nice and crisp. The plaited hair around the exterior has some loss, over about half the surface, but one side of the plait is still intact.

This ring is not stamped or hallmarked, but we have tested it with nitric acid and guarantee it to be 10 karat purity.

The ring is a size 9 3/4.

The head of the ring is about 6.8 millimeters wide, while the rest of the band is about 4.7 millimeters wide.

This ring weighs 2 grams. -jm
