Presented is a rare American folk art pottery piece, a potato flask. This flask dates to around the 1820s-1860s. This particular flask is a naturalistic reddish brown with pink and darker brown detailing, in the form of the potato's eyes, as well as a striking green rim around the mouth. The flask has an enameled metal stand, so it can be displayed upright, and it actually makes a really appealing display piece this way. This flask is one of a group of three sold at Sotheby's auction house on November 12, 1974.
This piece is in excellent overall condition, particularly considering the age and material. There is some minor crazing and surface wear to the glaze of the exterior, but nothing excessive, and due to the relatively dark color of the glaze this is hard to notice in the first place. There is a little wear to the paint on the stand here and there. The flask itself has no chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs.
The flask itself measures about 7 x 3 3/4 x 2 1/4 or about 7 1/2 inches high on its stand. -jm
