Presented is a rare American folk art pottery piece, a potato flask. This flask dates to around the 1820s-1860s. This particular flask is a mottled dark blue over white, with red detailing, in the form of the potato's eyes and around the interior of the mouth. The rich almost cranberry red splashes for the eyes is really striking with the cobalt blue of the flask. The flask has an enameled metal stand, so it can be displayed upright, and it actually makes a really appealing display piece this way. The stand is even subtly painted to match the eyes, in spots where it crosses over them, so it's unobtrusive. This flask is one of a group of three sold at Sotheby's auction house on November 12, 1974.

This piece is in excellent overall condition, particularly considering the age and material. The glaze is in very good shape with only the most minor crazing here and there, and a couple of little glaze skips on the front side, which are original to the making of the piece. The paint on the stand is in great shape. The flask itself has no chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs.

The flask itself measures about 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 2 3/4 or about 5 7/8 inches high on its stand. -jm
