Presented is a fantastic antique German tin glazed earthenware tobacco jar, from circa 1800. The jar is an impressive size, and nicely decorated on the exterior with a dragon design, as well as 'Drakenburg #13' perhaps for the strain it was used to contain. The jar has its original brass lid, which has a red accession number on the underside for the Museum of Fine Arts. We also have a tag with the provenance of the piece, which reads: “Tin glazed earthenware tobacco jar w brass cover. Germany – C1800 – foliate framed crest of dragons titled Drakenburg #13. Provenance: Property of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. $875 SA 5049”
This piece is in good overall condition, particularly for the age and material, though there are certainly some glaze issues. There are losses to the glaze around the sides, though these are all pretty shallow and leave the majority of the decoration intact. The glaze has some crazing, as you'd expect. It is overall pretty typical of tin glazed earthenware. The foot has some small chips around the side, and the rim has some larger chips, though these can't be seen when the lid is on.
The jar stands about 13 1/2 inches tall to the top of the lid, or about 11 1/2 inches at the rim, and measures about 9 1/2 inches in diameter at the widest point. -jm
