Rare c1780-1810 American Oval Green Glass Spectacles Sunglasses Eye Glasses
Regular price
$194.00
Presented is a wonderful pair of antique American steel eyeglasses or spectacles. These date to circa 1780-1810. The glasses are a simple stylish design, with oval lenses, a deep curved/arched bridge, and prominent round loops at the ends of the arms, where a lanyard could easily be attached. The most interesting thing is the lenses, which are a charming rich green glass, making this a very early pair of sunglasses, presumably. The arms fold at the temple as you'd expect, and the earpieces are hinged so they also fold to make the glasses more compact for storage. The earpieces and their loop ends are wrapped in green felt and yarn. The glasses come with a metal case, which opens with a little thumbpiece button.
These glasses are in excellent condition. The frames are working well, with no damages and no repairs. The glass is intact, but of course to wear them you would need to have a professional add your own lenses. Some wear to the case, as you'd expect.
The glasses measure about 4 5/8 inches from temple to temple. The case is about 5 1/8 inches long.
The total weight for the pair of glasses (without the case) is 23 grams, so these are relatively light and comfortable frames. -jm
