Presented is an excellent quality Chinese carved statue of a Daoist immortal subduing a beast, possibly Liu Haichan. We believe the statue dates to around the 1920s-1960s. The statue depicts a very dynamic scene of a male figure partially astride a pixiu or fu lion type beast, pulling a chain attached to the creature's nose. The figure's features look very similar to depictions of Liu Haichan, and other statues of this scene are attributed as such, but we're not sure of the identification to a specific myth. The quality of the carving is exceptional, very detailed and lively, in rich dark wood, I believe it to be rosewood. The beast has expressive, glass eyes and a horse-like tail of some kind of fiber. Overall a very well executed piece.
This statue is in great overall condition. There is a chip to the figure's big toe, and to something he is carrying on his back, but overall the figure is in great shape.
This statue measures about 12 inches tall and about 8 by 5 inches LxW.
