Presented is an excellent pair of sterling silver compotes, made in the 20th century by American Arts & Crafts silversmith William DeMatteo. The compotes are made very much in the fashion of Georg Jensen, with a hand hammered finish visible in the basins and on the feet. The shafts are done in an elegant tapered twist design, with figural clusters of grapes adorning the top. Really a fantastic and eye-catching pair, perfect for serving clusters of grapes like the ones depicted on the shaft, or whatever else you like.
This pair of compotes is in great overall condition. There is a little bit of a bend to the shaft on both, very faint, highly dependent on how the compotes are turned/angled and whether or not they are side by side. Likely this could be gently straightened but it is very minor so we are leaving them as we found them. There are no splits, no dents, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
The underside of each compote is stamped with the maker's mark of William G. DeMatteo as well as sterling.
Each compote stands about 6 1/2 inches tall and measures about 6 3/4 inches in diameter at the rim, or about 3 3/8 inches in diameter at the base.
The total weight for the pair is 844 grams or 29.8 regular ounces. -jm
