Presented is a very fine quality pair of English sterling silver candlesticks or candelabras made in London. Each candlestick was made in 1790, most likely by William Laver of London. The bodies of each candlestick are weighted and have a classical threaded designs. Each candlestick has its old, original bobeche or wax drip. The top portions, the candelabra tops, with the three candle holders, were made later in 1937 and are not weighted, they are also solid sterling silver. These candelabra tops have no weighting in them as previously mentioned and are quite solid and heavy. Although the top portions were made 147 years later, they were made specifically for these candlesticks are a perfectly designed match.

Both top portions and their bobeches are marked with the leopard’s head for London, the lion passant for sterling silver, a date letter B for 1937 and a maker’s mark for Isreal Freeman and Son. The candlestick itself and the original single bobeche of each are marked with the leopard’s head crowned for London, the lion passant for sterling silver, a duty mark of the King’s head, a date letter p for 1790 and a maker’s mark most likely for William Laver.

This set is in great overall condition, especially for their age. There are a couple of repairs to the arms of the candelabra tops where the arms meet the body. These repairs are hardly visible, unless you look directly down on the piece. The repairs are well done, and with silver solder. No lead solder. The repairs are well hidden because of the twisting design of the arm itself. In addition, there is a compression dent to one of the candlesticks which we have pointed out in the last photograph.  Otherwise, the condition is excellent.  There are no other repairs, no other dents, no breaks, no splits, no missing pieces.

Each complete candlestick measures 15 1/2 inches tall and the top portions measure 16 1/2 inches wide.

Each single candlestick measures 11 1/2 inches tall and has a diameter of 5 5/8 inches at the base.

The top portion and all of the bobeches weigh 1590 grams or 56 ounces in pure sterling silver. These tops are not weighted. We have not included the weight of each large candlestick because they are weighted.
