Presented is a gorgeous pair of 18 karat gold, aquamarine, sapphire and tourmaline earrings by jewelry designer Paula Crevoshay. Each earring is set with a huge slice of aquamarine as a central focus, with a round pearl, a sapphire cabochon, and an oval cut green tourmaline. Each of the aquamarine slices measure about 36 by 27 millimeters, and are left in their naturally occurring shapes, which look a little like clouds; the stones are both distinct individuals, but still match nicely. Each pearl measures about 5 millimeters in diameter, while each sapphire measures about 5.2 x 4.3 millimeters (at least .66 points ea, or two thirds of a carat, 1.33ct total) and each green tourmaline measures about 5.3 x 4.1 millimeters (at least .33 points ea, or one third of a carat, .66ct total). The stones are exceptional quality, as you'd expect from a designer with Paula Crevoshay's stated commitment to integrity and artistic vision, beautifully cut and polished and exquisite in terms of color. These earrings are made in an antiquities inspired style, with applied granulated decoration against gold with a rich textured finish, reminiscent of Etruscan Revival pieces but with uncharacteristically bold choices of gem. The earrings have omega style backs with posts for wear with pierced ears, but the posts are done in a hinged design so they can fold down, and the earrings could be worn with unpierced ears.
Paula Crevoshay, the designer of these earrings, is known for her use of colorful and exotic gemstones and for drawing inspiration from the natural world as well as cultures from all across the globe. Her work is displayed in (and, in some instances, even commissioned by) renowned institutions and museums like the Smithsonian, Carnegie Museum, the Gemological Institute of America in New York, the Natural History Museum of LA, and many more. These earrings were acquired from an estate along with several other fine pieces of Paula Crevoshay's work, many of which came to us with their original receipts from EF Watermelon in Old Lyme, Connecticut, the brainchild gallery of two of the founding members of the American Gem Trade Association, which both gave a platform to jewelry artists like Paula Crevoshay and others of similar renown and supplied them with unique and high end gemstones in their capacity as dealers in fine gems. EF Watermelon showcased and sold her work directly, making these earrings single-owner pieces of undisputed authenticity. This particular pair of earrings retailed new from the gallery for $7960 in 1997, which in 2023 terms would be over $14000.
The earrings are in pristine condition. The stones are all well set and intact, with no chips. The clipbacks function well and have a good strong spring mechanism. No breaks and no repairs.
Each earring is stamped and guaranteed 18k as well as the maker's mark for Paula Crevoshay.
