Presented is a wonderful antique Victorian 10 karat yellow gold watch chain with slider, dating to around the 1850s-1870s. The chain itself is finely made with a nice feeling of weight and quality, in a simple snake chain style. The slider is an elegant quatrefoil design, with finely hand engraved scrollwork detailing and an oval honey orange stone set in the center, likely a paste stone. The chain has an old style hinged clasp at one end, which opens by turning a little round thumbwheel. The chain is quite long, and as we show in the photo it can be worn as an interesting necklace rather than its original purpose as a watch chain.
This chain is in excellent condition. The slider moves well on the chain, and the chain has no kinks or breaks. The engraved details are nice and crisp, and the stone is well set. Clasp is working well.
This piece is not stamped or hallmarked anywhere that we could find, but we have tested it with nitric acid and guarantee the chain and slider to be 10 karat gold. The clasp tests as 14 karat gold.
The chain measures about 26 3/4 inches long.
This chain weighs 35.6 grams, or 1.3 regular ounces. -jm
