Neat English Georgian Sterling Silver Openwork Oval Dresser Catchall Tray 1777
Regular price
$687.00
Presented is an interesting antique English Georgian sterling silver openwork tray, with blue velvet liner. This piece is dated 1777 and possibly made by Thomas Daniell. Originally, this was the stand to a caster or cruet set, but has since been converted to this dresser tray or catchall by removing the center handle and adding the blue velvet lining the bottom. The sides are done in very ornate openwork consisting of foliate scrollwork surrounding urns, with a beaded border around the top and bottom edge. One side has a cartouche with a crest of an eagle's claw erased at the thigh. The tray stands on four stylized claw form feet.
This piece is in excellent condition. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs. This piece is hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard's head crowned for the city of London, the date letter b for 1777, and a partially rubbed maker's mark that looks like TD, possibly for Thomas Daniell.
This piece measures about 7 1/4 x 5 x 3 inches, LxWxH.
This piece weighs 538 grams or 19 regular ounces, total. Due to the liner and the interior metal of the floor of the stand, not all of this weight is sterling silver. -jm
