mid/late 1800s Scottish Sterling Silver Red and Banded Agate Garter Pin Brooch
Regular price
$168.00
Presented is a lovely antique Scottish sterling silver and agate pin or brooch, dating to the mid to late 1800s. The brooch is made in a squarish floral form, with pieces of striated and orange-red agate alternating. The 'petals' with rounded ends are buff agate with lighter and darker striations, and more translucent agate with a blue gray tint to it, while the more faceted looking pieces are the ones in red/orange. The center of the pin has a classic Scottish garter design in silver, finely detailed and hand engraved. The pin has an old C style clasp.
This piece is in great overall condition. The stones are well set with no chips or noticeable scratches. Clasp is working well. The silver frame has some irregularities, where it looks like something was removed or the pin was modified in some way. Please view the photos carefully.
This piece is not stamped or hallmarked, but we have tested it with nitric acid and guarantee it to be sterling silver. The pin came to us in a lot of Scottish sterling jewelry, some hallmarked, so we have no doubts it is of the same type.
The pin measures about 2 1/8 inches square.
This pin weighs 21.7 grams.
