Presented is a fantastic quality hand carved Rosso Antico stone replica of a Greco-Roman oil lamp, dating to the mid to late 1800s. This is undoubtedly a Grand Tour souvenir, and it is one of the best quality ones we have seen, emulating a very ornate antiquities oil lamp. But where the original style of lamp would likely have been pottery or brass/bronze, this piece is carved from dark red stone (Rosso Antico) in extraordinary detail. The body of the lamp is in the form of a swan, with the swan's extended curved neck as a handle. The opposite end of the lamp is in the form of a boar's head, and the lid is a classical bearded Zeus type mask. The base is in the form of a coiled serpent, encircling the swan's webbed feet. The quality of the carving is exceptional, from the texturing of the swan's feathers and the mask's face to the snake's scales. The carving and the patina of age
somewhat obscures the details of the stone, but when the lid is removed you can see the rich red stone polished smooth with fine marbling and veining visible throughout. The basin really does extend to the hole/spout, so presumably this oil lamp really could be used, though I don't know if that's advisable. Still, a very interesting piece.

This piece is in great overall condition. There is a chip/loss to the tip of the snake's tail, and a few little nicks here and there, but nothing super noticeable. There is some lacquer or something of the like visible on the underside of the piece, but this is not a glue repair or damage, possibly this piece was on a base at some point.

The lamp measures about 6 3/4 x 2 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches, LxWxH.
