Presented is a great old Chinese cinnabar lacquerware box, dating to the mid to late 1800s. The box is made in an oblong quatrefoil form, with a very detailed and finely hand carved scene of three figures in a landscape of willow and ginkgo trees, with mountains in the fore- and background. The recessed surfaces have intricate geometric patterning, Chinese meander/key for the 'sky' portion, concentric diamonds like hills, and compact concentric squares making up the foreground's texture and carrying over into the sides of the box. The interior and underside of the box are black lacquer. The lacquer is done in thick, heavy papier mache.

This box is being sold in 'As Is' condition, so please view all photos carefully. The exterior of the box is in great shape overall, with just a couple of spots of loss to the bottom edge, and a couple of touched up/filled in spots that are only distinguishable by a slightly different shade of red. Take off the lid and there are some minor losses around the lip where it sits and to the interior rim. Flip over the lid and there is one section of loss to the rim about 1 1/4 inches long, a smaller loss about half an inch long, and a little flake of loss next to that. The largest loss extends upward into the interior, and has a corresponding fine line up the exterior, but this is very hard to see even with close inspection. From the exterior this piece looks great, and of course it is still quite useable as a box. The carved scene of the lid is in excellent condition, and that's really the focal point of the piece.

The box measures about 5 by 4 by 1 7/8 inches, LxWxH. -jm
