Presented is a charming antique snuffbox dating to circa 1830-1870. This box is likely of French or English make, but it's difficult to pin down which as both places produced these. The box is black lacquered papier mache material. The lid is inlaid with pieces of iridescent abalone shell which catch the light beautifully, forming a border around the edge of the lid with one larger piece in the center. Though this was made as a snuffbox, it would make a nice trinket or memento box today, for storing whatever you like.
The box is in great overall condition. There may be a little loss to the central piece of abalone on the lid, but it's hard to tell as all the pieces are rather irregular in shape. There are no missing pieces, though one may have a little fleck of loss, again it's hard to say. The papier mache itself is in great shape, no splits. The lid closes quite securely. The box measures about 3 3/8 by 1 ¾ by 1 ¼ inches, LxWxH.
