mid 1800s Victorian 18k Gold Locket Pendant / Brooch w Grape Vine & Bird Design
Regular price
$954.00
Presented is a charming American Victorian 18 karat gold brooch or pendant. This piece dates to around the mid 1800s. The brooch is oval in form, with an ornate frame around an oval glass bezel, set with a lock of light colored hair. The frame is done in the form of grape leaves, vines, and clusters, with a little bird at the top and a shield-shaped cartouche at the bottom. The decoration is exceptionally well done, each leaf, the bird, and the grape clusters are all
fine individually made pieces with exquisite hand engraved texturing and detailing. The brooch has a lever catch style safety clasp in the back, as well as a loop or bail so it can be worn as a pendant. The pin comes in a nice old storage case with a leathered exterior and velvet interior, which may not be original to the piece but is certainly contemporary with it.
This piece is in great overall condition. The clasp is a replacement, though it dates to circa 1900 based on style and is itself antique. There are a few little solder touch-ups to the decoration of the frame here and there, but nothing that is easily noticed without close, careful inspection under good light. The glass is in great shape. The clasp functions well and closes securely.
This piece is not stamped or hallmarked, but we have tested it with nitric acid and determined that the majority of the piece, the frame, is 18 karat gold. The replaced clasp is not 18k, the pin shaft is 10 karat gold, and the lever-catch clasp is 14 karat gold.
The backing on the brooch is removable, and a photograph of your loved one
added.
The brooch measures about 1 3/4 by 1 3/8 inches.
This piece weighs 11.1 grams.
