Presented is a lovely Wedgwood jasperware pitcher dating to around the 1890s-1910s. This pitcher is done in the classic dark blue color, a very rich blue against which the white jasper figures and wreaths really pop. The pitcher is a classical round shouldered form, gently tapering inward toward the foot. Around the side is a scene of Greco-Roman carrying urns and bowls of fruit in a procession, with laurel trees, flowering bushes, and putti nearby, towards an offering brazier. Around the upper portion is a continuous band of decoration in the form of hanging floral garlands and bosses. All the decoration is quite crisp and detailed. I believe this is the family of patterns sometimes referred to as 'Sacrifice,' which the scene certainly suggests.
This piece is in excellent condition. There are no chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs.
The pitcher is signed Wedgwood and England on the underside (impressed marks).
The pitcher stands about 5 5/8 inches tall at the tallest point and measures about 5 1/2 inches in diameter at the widest point, about 7 1/2 inches from the handle to the spout. -jm
