Presented is a fine old Sheffield fused silverplate sugar basket or sugar bowl. This piece dates to circa 1770-1800. The piece is made in a classical form, with a square pedestal base and openwork wire rib designs. The rim has a finely engraved border of acanthus and rosette designs. The basket has a cobalt glass liner which is undoubtedly original.
This piece is in great overall condition. The glass has no chips or cracks. There is a little dent to one side of the foot of the base, which is quite hard to notice. Some wear through the silver plating here and there, and some remaining tarnish. No repairs, no major damages.
The basket stands about 4 ¾ inches tall at the rim and measures about 5 1/8 inches in diameter.
The total weight for the piece is 767 grams or 27 ounces, including the glass. -jm
