Presented is a lovely antique Chinese export porcelain mug or tankard style cup, dating to around the 1830s-1860s. The cup is a very large and tall size, done in a colorful Famille Rose palette in a Bird and Butterfly pattern. As the name suggests, this pattern features scenes of very vibrantly colored birds and butterflies, as well as lush flowers, foliage and fruit. The handle of the mug is done in a crossed strap style, with applied decoration where it meets the body.
This piece is in excellent overall condition. There is a tiny chip to the top rim, another little flake just to the glaze at the top rim, and another small flake to the glaze near the base, but these are all fairly hard to notice without close, careful inspection. There are no larger chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs.
The mug stands about 5 5/8 inches tall and measures about 5 1/4 inches from handle to opposite side, or about 4 1/4 inches in diameter at the mouth. -jm
