Presented is a great Jacques Lipchitz sterling silver and bronze plaque commemorating the silver anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel. Jacques Lipchitz was an influential sculptor in the Cubist movement that was pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Lipchitz was born in 1891 and died 1973, the same year as the 25th anniversary of Israel's founding. The bowl is sterling silver with a bronze base, and was commissioned by the Israel Museum of Jerusalem. The silver bowl depicts a man in high relief wrestling with a vulture and holding aloft a menorah. The front is signed J Lipchitz. The relief is after Lipchitz' earlier 1943 bronze cast of the same name.
The plaque's bronze base acts as the plaque's inscription, and reads, “The Struggle” by Jacques Lipchitz. Created for THE SILVER ANNIVERSARY OF ISRAEL. Commissioned by the Israel Museum of Jerusalem in the Year 5733. Officially authorized by the 25th Anniversary Committee. To commemorate the Founding of the Free State of Israel May 14th, 1948. Struck at the Atelier of The Medallic Art Company. Issued by The Liberty Mint. In this 25th Year of Independence: 5734. This Salver is Certified Register # of The World Limited Edition of 9700 Proofs of Sterling Silver mounted on a Bronze base. The bronze plaque bears the signatures of Jacques Lipchitz and Sandberg, an official of the Israel Museum.
The condition is excellent.
The bowl measures approximately 11 3/4 inches wide and 1 3/4 inches high.
The bowl weighs 1017.8 grams or 35.90 ounces. It is impossible to determine how much of the weight is sterling silver and how much is bronze, but it seems to us that clearly the majority of the weight is sterling silver.
