Presented is a superb quality very old pewter cup, dating to the late 1600s and likely of Norwegian make. The cup is made in a classical beaker form with no handle, and is engraved on the exterior with two large flowers, each unique and very intricate. The cup has three separate inscriptions, the oldest of which reads CCS 1684 in a style of engraving that is a bit more primitive, with another reading W. P. Ellison, Norway, and 1885, and a third in the most clearly hand-done engraving so far reading simply 1806.
We believe this piece to be of Norwegian origin not just due to the inscription, but because it was acquired from a sale of mostly Norwegian artifacts. There is what looks like a hallmark on the underside, but it is indistinct.
The cup is in great overall condition. The details of the decoration and inscriptions are quite crisp. There are no splits, no dents, and no solder repairs.
The cup stands about 2 ½ inches tall. -jm
