Presented is an excellent quality English Staffordshire figurine of a well dressed young couple. This piece dates to around the mid 1800s. The figurine depicts a man and woman in period typical fancy clothing, with matching navy blue and gold jackets. The pair are standing on either side of a vase decked out with flowers and clusters of grapes, the man with his arm casually around it and the woman holding some of the grapes in her hand. The figurine is very colorful and lively, nicely detailed and hand painted. Really a charming piece of Staffordshire in a large size that will be great for display.
This piece is in good overall condition, particularly considering its age, material, and size, but there are some issues. The male figure has a hairline crack diagonally across his chest region, and a minor chip to one of the folds on the front of his shirt. The back of the figure has a fine hairline beginning at the woman's shoulder and spreading down diagonally. These two lines are hard to notice and barely stand out from the typical Staffordshire crazing to the glaze. The black paint of the couple's boots and their hair has some flaking, as you can see in the first photograph. There is a spot on the back at the very bottom, visible in the fourth photograph, that looks like a chip, but please note it is not a chip. This is original to the making of the piece, the glaze is continuous right over it, with no discoloration or any sign of repair.
This figurine stands about 16 1/2 inches tall, and measures about 10 1/4 x 3 5/8 inches. -jm
