Presented is a fine antique American sterling silver platter or stuffing serving spoon. This spoon was made by Boston area maker Crosby, Morse & Foss, and dates to circa 1869-1875. The handle is beautifully hand engraved with bright cut decoration all along the stem, with a little navette at the midpoint and a handsome stylized shell or fan at the terminal, very appealing in the way the engraving catches the light. The silver of the stem is quite thick, and overall the piece has a nice feeling of weight and quality in the hand. The spoon has a large, generously sized bowl and a long, arched handle with a knob/stop on the back, so it can rest on the rim of a serving dish or platter. Perfect for Thanksgiving!
The stem is stamped with the maker's mark for Crosby, Morse & Foss, as well as 925 for sterling silver.
This server is in excellent overall condition. The details of the pattern and the engraving of the body are nice and crisp. No splits, no dents, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
The server is about 12 3/4 inches long.
This piece weighs 194 grams or 6.8 ounces. -jm
