Presented is an impressive Japanese blue and white porcelain bowl dating to the second half of the 1800s. The bowl is a good large size, suitable for use as a centerpiece or fruit bowl, perhaps even a punch bowl. The interior of the bowl is fantastically decorated with a lavish scene of a flowering tree, surrounded by rolling hills and little chrysanthemums, as well as a swallow or similar bird up above. The interior rim of the bowl as well as the exterior rim are decorated with floral and foliate scrollwork motifs, while the sides around the exterior have larger sprays of flowers, perhaps peonies. All the decoration is quite intricate and lively.
This piece is in excellent condition. There is a single bubble burst to the glaze on the trunk of the tree, which is original to the firing of the piece and not a damage. There are no chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs.
The bowl measures about 14 1/4 inches in diameter and stands about 6 inches high at the rim.
