Presented is an excellent old Sheffield fused silver plate serving tray, dating to around the 1820s. This tray is made and signed by James Dixon & Sons, a very well known name in excellent silverplate goods. The tray is made in a handsome classical form, with a bold beaded edge and decorative flourishes around the rim. The surface of the tray is beautifully hand engraved with intricate panels of foliate scrollwork decoration. The center of the tray has an inset sterling silver panel, with a three letter monogram in very ornately interwoven lettering. The tray stands on four acanthus scroll form feet.
This piece is in great overall condition. There is some wear through the silver plating to the copper on some of the high points of the decoration and on the edges of the underside, but overall the plating is in great shape. No breaks, and no repairs.
The tray measures about 18 1/2 x 15 1/4 x 1 3/8 inches, LxWxH. The useable surface area is about 15 1/4 x 13 inches.
The tray weighs 4 pounds or 1.8 kilograms. -jm
