Impressive c1740-1780 Irish Sterling Silver Double Handle Loving Cup Trophy
Regular price
$1,536.00
Presented is a fantastic antique Irish sterling silver double handle cup, dating to circa 1740-1780. The cup is made in a handsome classical “loving cup” or trophy type of form, with double scroll handles and a round pedestal foot. The midpoint has a reeded band of decoration, and the interior has a gold wash. The underside of the base has a small marriage monogram of the initials W * N H, but this is not visible without turning the cup upside down to inspect the underside. An absolutely gorgeous and very impressive piece of 18th century Irish silver.
The side of the cup is stamped with the seated Hibernia mark guaranteeing sterling silver, the crowned harp (in a conforming shaped punch rather than an oval, indicating a date prior to 1787) for the city of Dublin, and a maker''s mark of IW, possibly for John Weldring or James Wiburd, poorly struck.
This piece is in excellent overall condition. There is a very minor solder repair to the base, visible in the seventh photograph, which is likely itself over a hundred years old and quite well done, making it hard to notice if you aren't looking for it. The gold wash of the interior is in good shape. There are no splits, no dents, no leaks, no monogram removals, and no other repairs.
The cup stands about 5 1/4 inches tall and measures about 7 inches across the handles, or about 4 1/4 inches in diameter.
This piece weighs 467 grams or 16.5 regular ounces. -jm
