Presented is a fine old Staffordshire transferware platter or large serving tray, dating to circa 1840 by Goodwin & Ellis. The platter is made in the pattern called Peruvian Hunters, sometimes called Peruvian Horse Hunt. The center of the tray depicts a large and intricate scene of tribal Peruvian huntsman, inside a border of floral decoration with four scenic reserves at the four cardinal points around the rim. This is a large and impressive piece of old English pottery, easily able to accommodate a large roast or Thanksgiving turkey.
This piece is in excellent condition. There are no chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs.
The underside is signed G&E for Goodwin & Ellis, formerly Goodwin & Harris, who operated under this G&E name for a very short period of time, c1839-1840. The piece is also signed with the name of the pattern, Peruvian Hunters.
This tray measures about 19 5/8 x 15 3/4 inches, LxW. The usable interior surface measures about 13 3/4 x 10 inches. -jm
