Presented is an excellent quality antique Davenport stone china soup tureen, dating to circa 1815-1820. This tureen is made in the highly sought after Flying Bird pattern, which is a vibrant and colorful Chinoiserie pattern depicting a long tailed bird in flight surrounded by stunning flowers and foliage. The palette is a very eye-catching array of blues, greens, orange, purple and pink shades, with fine gold gilt detailing. This pattern would later be produced by Mason's Ironstone as well as other fine English makers. This is quite a large size serving tureen in a handsome octagonal form, with a notched lid to accommodate a serving ladle. The lid is particularly nice in that it has a prominent, very grippable handle in a double scroll form, done in rich cobalt blue with gilt details. The ends of the body of the tureen have nicely detailed handles in the form of lion's heads, which match the lid handle in their blue and gold color. We have many additional pieces in this pattern from the same estate including some particularly rare examples, which you can find by searching “Flying Bird” in our store.

This piece is in excellent condition, particularly considering age. There is a little wear to the cobalt blue on the noses of the lion mask handles, but this is quite minor. There are no chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs.

The tureen is stamped on the underside with the oldest used Davenport mark, used circa 1805-1820.

The tureen measures about 13 3/4 by 8 1/2 inches LxW, including the mask handles at either end, or 11 3/4 by 8 1/2 inches LxW not including the masks.
The height to the top of the finial of the lid is about 9 1/2 inches, and the lid itself (which overhangs the basin of the tureen a little bit) measures about 12 3/8 by 9 1/8 inches, LxW. -jm
