Presented is a great Hopi Tribe Katsina or Kachina doll representing the Male Kokopelli or hunched back flute player figure.
“The Male Kokopelli is a hunched back flute player, fertility god, seducer of young girls, and baby-maker, he carries a bag of presents to distribute to the women he seduces. Probably the most popular kachina of all, his image appears widely in rock art and ancient pottery throughout the southwest and today this figure is a widely used motif on pottery, jewelry, and other Native American items. He only appears in the Mixed Kachina Dances and sometimes he appears in the Night Dance. Although his origins and the significance of his prehistoric appearances are speculative, he has a contemporary presence as a figure in Hopi stories and as a Hopi kachina.”
This piece is likely made out of cottonwood root. On the underside of the katsina, the wood is marked with a maker's name, Rosaline Coin.
The Kokopelli is in great condition. Please note that due to the delicate nature of cottonwood root, chips and breaks can happen easily. It is clear that the eye posts have been glued back on to the figures helmet. It is likely that there was suppose to be a nose on the helmet as well, but the piece did not come with a nose piece. The kokopelli's instrument has been broken off. His bag for presenting gifts is still present but is no longer securely glued in place. The painted details are bright and crisp.
