Handsome Mid 1800s Pair Old Sheffield Silverplate Column Form 12" Candlesticks
Regular price
$671.00
Presented is an exceptional pair of antique Sheffield silverplate on copper candlesticks, dating to the mid 1800s. The candlesticks are made in a handsome classical form, with the shafts done as tapered fluted columns on stepped square pedestal bases. The candlesticks are nicely decorated with boss-and-swag ornamentation around the bases and where the bases meet the columns, while the shoulders and socle have acanthus leaves supporting more draped swags. The bobeches, bases, and shaft are further decorated with beadwork borders. The bobeches/wax drips are removable, for ease of cleaning, and the candlesticks are weighted/filled for stability.
Both candlesticks have a maker's mark on the inside of the socle, in the shape of a dagger or sword (unidentified).
This pair is in excellent condition, particularly considering age. There is only minor wear through the silver plating to some of the highpoints of the decoration here and there. The undersides have been refelted with new green felt, but the original felt is still underneath. Any dark areas etc visible in the photographs are only reflections, not any damage or wear. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs. ***Please note the apparent difference in height in the first photo is only due to one bobeche/wax drip not being seated fully in the socle. The bobeches sit nicely when they are paired with the correct candlestick, but if swapped they sit unevenly.*** In actuality, the candlesticks only differ in height by an eighth (1/8th) of an inch or less, typical of antique handmade pieces.
Each candlestick stands about 12 inches tall and measures about 5 inches square at the base.
The total weight for the pair is 2.53 kilograms or about 5.6 pounds. -jm
