Fine Pair c1820s English Georgian Sterling Silver Bright Cut Sugar Nips Tongs
Regular price
$85.00
Presented is a wonderful pair of English Georgian sterling silver sugar nips or tongs. These tongs date to circa the 1820s-1830s and are made in a lovely classic form, featuring bright cut hand engraved decoration along the edges, with a flower on either side. The back/hinge area has a marriage type monogram of I*T.
This piece is in excellent overall condition, particularly considering age. One arm has a little bit of a bend to its shaft, but the tongs are still entirely useable. Some wear to the decoration on the exterior of the bowls. There are no splits, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
The tongs are stamped on the inner sides of the arms, one side with the English lion passant for sterling silver, the other with a maker's mark of WC, likely for William Chawner II.
These tongs measure about 5 3/8 inches long.
The tongs weigh 28.4 grams, or 1 regular ounce. -jm
