Presented is a fantastic old Delft blue and white tin glazed pottery jug or pitcher. This piece dates to around the second half of the 1700s. The jug is nicely decorated with a continuous scene around the sides, showing ships in a harbor with rich foliage, trees, and fences in the foreground, with a detailed genre scene of a farm couple and baby on the front beneath the spout. The neck of the jug is decorated with intricate floral and foliate scrollwork which is quite ornate. The spout is done in an interesting mask form, while the handle is a double scroll form decorated with floral designs.
The underside of the jug is signed J.V. in blue.
This piece is in great overall condition. There is a tiny chip to the glaze on the spout, as we point out in the tenth photograph. There is some crazing to the glaze visible on the underside in the eighth photo, and some crazing visible in the inside bottom as well as a little on the handle. There are no other chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs.
The jug stands about 8 1/4 inches tall, measures about 6 1/4 inches in diameter around the body, or about 8 1/4 inches from the back of the handle to the tip of the spout. -jm
