Presented is a fabulous English sterling silver 90 piece flatware set in the Rattail pattern. This set is an assembled set, mostly from circa 1973. Though the pieces are contemporary, they are done in a much older Queen Anne style, with a pronounced rattail design to the backs of the spoons and a central ridge along the fronts of the handles. The knives have pistol grip style handles, as was the style for knives used alongside rattail pieces, with stainless steel blades in the New French form.

The set is a full dinner size, and provides service for twelve with five piece place settings, as well as a variety of serving pieces and other utensils. Of the entire set, only the three 7” spoons have a monogram, as listed below.

This set consists of:

12 dinner knives—9 ½ inches long.
12 butter knives—6 ½ inches long.
12 dinner forks—8 1/8 inches long.
12 luncheon/salad forks—6 7/8 inches long.
12 round bowl soup spoons—6 ¼ inches long.
7 teaspoons/coffee spoons—5 3/8 inches long.
11 coffee/5 o'clock spoons—5 1/8 inches long.
3 serving spoons—8 ½ inches long.
3 oval soup/place/dessert spoons—7 inches long. Monogrammed MHW.
1 sardine/cold meat serving fork—7 7/8 inches long.
2 medium serving ladles—7 inches long.
1 gravy/sauce ladle--5 ¾ inches long.
1 lettuce/pickle/olive serving fork-- 7 5/8 inches long.
1 sugar scuttle scoop—5 inches.
1 butter or cheese knife—5 inches long.
1 hors d'oeuvre serving fork--4 1/8 inches long.
1 master salt spoon—4 3/8 inches long.

This set is in excellent overall condition. There are no damages, no monogram removals, and no repairs. The single 4 3/8” spoon has some noticeable wear to the terminal of the handle and the hallmarks.

We are including with the set a brand new fitted storage chest, as seen in the photos. The chest is wood in a rich dark walnut finish, with a velvet lined interior.

All the pieces have English hallmarks guaranteeing sterling purity silver, either the lion passant or the lion rampant (used by Scotland).

The dinner knives, butter knives, sardine serving fork, olive fork, sugar serving spoon, small ladle and cheese knife have the maker's mark for Cooper Bros & Sons, with the crown for the city of Sheffield, and all the knives have a date letter for 1973, with the rest of the mentioned pieces being just a year or two earlier or later than that.

The dinner forks, luncheon forks, soup spoons, 5 1/8” coffee spoons, and 8 1/2” serving spoons were made by James W Potter & Sons, with the leopard's head for the city of London, and the date letter r for 1972.

The two medium ladles have Glasgow hallmarks, with the maker's mark for Lawson & Co, with a date letter Q for 1913.

The remaining few pieces are by other English makers and are contemporary.

All pieces are English sterling silver and so marked.

The total weight for the set, not including the knives due to their stainless blades, is 3200 grams or 112.9 regular ounces.
