Presented is a wonderful antique pair of Durgin sterling silver ice tongs. These tongs are made in the popular Fairfax pattern, which began production in 1910. This handsome Art Deco pattern was also made by Gorham, and is highly collectible today by either maker. The tongs have a pierced spoon type end opposite a floriform claw end, perfect for gripping ice cubes but quite usable for a variety of other serving purposes as well. The hinge of the tongs has a monogram of M in finely done Gothic lettering, though it could also be a W, depending on perspective.
Both arms of the tongs are stamped on the interior with the Durgin maker's mark as well as sterling and pat'd.
This piece is in excellent condition. The pattern is crisp and there are no signs of stress at the hinge. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
This pair of tongs measures about 6 3/4 inches long and weighs 69.7 grams or 2.5 regular ounces. -jm
