Presented is a fine old Victorian silver watch winding fob on a short chain, dating to circa 1850-1875. This piece is likely of American or English make, but we aren't certain. The fob itself is set with a beautiful piece of orange-red carnelian with rich internal striations in a swivel frame, with a watch winding key at the bottom. The fob is attached by a loop at the top to a split ring at the end of a short length of chain, so it can easily be taken on and off the chain. The chain is hand made, consisting of cylindrical links alternating with rectangular wire links in an interesting style, all hand done work. The top of the chain has a little loop where it could be attached to a watch chain, chatelaine, etc. Very interesting old piece!
This piece is in great condition. The carnelian is in great shape, with no chips. The chain is in great shape, with no kinks, no breaks, and no repairs.
This piece is not stamped or hallmarked that we could find, but we have tested it with nitric acid and guarantee it to be sterling silver.
The total length is 8 3/8 inches. The fob itself measures about 1 ¼ by 1 ½ inches.
The piece weighs 18.5 grams.
