Fine 1888 Howard Co Sterling Silver Heavy Openwork Scroll Foot Bowl Basket
Regular price
$1,223.00
Presented is a superb quality Howard & Co sterling silver basket or basket form dish, dated 1888. This piece is beautifully made in an intricate openwork design, with foliate scrolls and little curlicues making a rich and mesmerizing pattern throughout. The basket stands on four Onslow style scroll feet, with acanthus leaf embellishments where they join the body. The basket is well constructed from thick, heavy gauge sterling silver, and has a very impressive feeling of weight to it; no doubt this sturdy, weighty construction has kept the openwork in fine undented condition. On the underside of the piece is a presentation inscription reading: R : T. Katharine Warren Thayer from Aunt Ruth Thayer October 13th, 1934.
This piece is in excellent condition. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
The basket is signed on the underside with the maker's mark for Howard & Co, New York, sterling, and a date of 1888.
The basket measures about 11 x 7 3/4 x 4 inches, LxWxH.
This piece weighs 625 grams or 22 regular ounces. -jm
